Third Annual Butterfly of Hope Gala

December 31, 2008 -- The Lupus Foundation of America, Arizona Chapter wants you as a sponsor, donor, participant, and/or attendee for our Third Annual Butterfly of Hope Gala on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the beautiful Mondrian Resort in Scottsdale. As you may know, Lupus afflicts more than 33,000 Arizonans, that's more than 100,000 family members who are directly affected by this debilitating illness. Unfortunately, Lupus is an often unknown, ignored illness. You can help us bring hope and comfort to those diagnosed with Lupus and their caregivers and loved ones, by attending, sponsoring, or donating today.

Lupus is a disease which can affect every organ in the body. It causes symptoms that vary from very mild to life threatening. There are four types of lupus; DISCOID (cutaneous) lupus is always limited to the skin and identified by a rash; it is usually the mildest form of lupus. SYSTEMIC lupus is usually more severe than discoid, and can affect any organ or organ system of the body. Generally, no two people with systemic lupus will have identical symptoms. DRUG-INDUCED lupus occurs after the use of certain prescribed drugs. The symptoms of drug-induced lupus are similar to systemic lupus. The drugs most commonly connected with drug-induced lupus are hydralazine (used to treat high blood pressure or hypertension) and procainamide (used to treat irregular heart rhythms). NEONATAL lupus is a rare condition acquired from the passage of maternal autoantibodies, specifically anti-Ro/SSA or anti-La/SSB, which can affect the skin, heart, and blood of the fetus and newborn. More than 85 percent of those with Lupus are women, most in the child-bearing years, 14 to 45. Similarly, minorities are impacted by Lupus, especially African-Americans, Native Americans and Asians.
