  • November 2, 2008 -- Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP and MRP application is successor of former Great Plains Dynamics and eEnterprise. Great Plains Software Dynamics accounting application was introduced in earlier 1990th as the future replacement for Great Plains Accounting for DOS and Windows. GPA as well as earlier Dynamics was available on competitive OS platforms: Windows and Mac. At this time, fall of 2008, it is probably impractical to talk about Great Plains Accounting customizations, as if you are still on GPA, you are probably not looking for business expansion, or if you have such plans, then you should consider migration to Great Plains Dynamics GP.
  • If your position in IT department requires you to find and maintain Dynamics GP vendor, consultant or business partner, please be our guest and read this small publication.
  • November 14, 2008 -- Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP implementation is a process, where you should expect high level of cooperation from your accounting, finance, IT, Sales, Purchasing, warehouse management, manufacturing and potentially other groups of employees. Plus it really depends on how yours and your Dynamics GP VAR priorities and implementation plans coincide, level of consulting, integration, customization, reports design expertise, carried by your Great Plains reseller. If you ended up in the situation, where you had to give up and look for second opinion or simply to name it – change your Great Plains consulting Partner, we would like to give your some advises, and examples , learned in our Dynamics GP implementation practice:
  • November 6, 2008 -- Microsoft Dynamics GP version update should be entrusted to professional Great Plains consultant, as there are multiple scenarios, such as required service packs, upgrade paths (such as if you are on version 6.0 and need to get to version 10.0 – which intermediate steps should you make). If you have add-ons, you should first check with add-on ISV if the add-on is ready for the intended version. During version upgrade process you may find that some of your tables contain so-called orphan records, where business logic is to some extend compromised and upgrade virtually stops – you will need to do data repair. This is especially possible if you are using Great Plains really long time and already undergone numerous version upgrades.
  • November 15, 2008 -- Current version of Microsoft Dynamics GP is 10.0, it is only available on Microsoft SQL Server platform. If you are still on Pervasive SQL or Ctree, there should be respected reason for you to stick to the old version and do not undertake upgrade to 8.0, 9.0 or 10.0. Additional complication might be something like Intellisol add-ons: Advanced POP or Project Accounting. From Great Plains users community we often hear complains that nobody at this time supports these old versions and all the Great Plains Resellers they tried to turn for support suggest migration to MS SQL and upgrade as the first step. As you can expect we have to serve USA and Canada nationwide to get reasonable number of old GP customers and we do it via remote support: web sessions.
  • October 23, 2008 -- ERP and MRP systems support requires local office representation plus centralized brain in the form of Software Development Factory and technical support call center. If your Great Plains implementation includes complex technical additions, such as customization, integration, data conversion, reports design, software developing and programming, then you should expect your Great Plains consultant and project manager to be locally available for visits onsite.
