Against the background of an economy in crisis, UK rail companies are facing an uncertain future if passenger demand falls dramatically over the coming year. Rail representatives met with transport secretary Geoff Hoon this week to discuss the outlook for the rail industry and what measures can be taken in the face of declining revenue from passengers.
Train companies may try to renegotiate the deals it made with the Department for Transport (DfT) which were based on the assumption of continuing growth in passenger numbers. According to one industry source, the possibility of a downturn was not even factored in to the DfT franchise agreements.
